Date night? Weekend fun? Family Vacation?
Dance the night away at Kickin’ Kountry where you’ll find live bands on particular weekends, trivia, dance lessons and great food and drinks. Find other live entertainment mainly on weekends, at some of our other unique establishments like the county’s newest brewery, Lockport Brewery. Sublime Smoke offers fine BBQ and craft brews along with occasional live bands. Park your bike at Vaughn’s Pub for a rockin’ good time during many weekends.
Looking for something a little quieter? Canal Tavern of Zoar adds another dimension to its summer evening patio with softer sounds by live musicians. Cozy up with dinner and a drink when they host trivia night or special paint and sip evenings.
Retreat to Zoar with your favorite project when you stay at the Zoar Cider Mill Crafting Retreat. Work on your craft in a space designed specifically for your convenience with other like-minded folks, and enjoy a day or week of hospitality in the 200 year old village. With a fabric and notion store located in downtown Bolivar (The Shop on Canal Street) you won’t have to worry about forgetting anything.
Did someone say “golf”? Two excellent courses are located here. Wilkshire Golf Course (18 holes) is just off Interstate 77, and you can find Zoar Village Golf Course (18 holes) just 3-1/2 miles down the road.
Water fun can be found just off the freeway at the Bolivar’s NTR Canoe Livery. Rent canoes or kayaks for a ride down the mighty Tuscarawas River – even spend a night under the stars if you’d like!
Or pack up the family and camp at Atwood Lake. Take advantage of a sand beach, plenty of picnic areas, concerts in the woods, and great fishing. With Atwood Lake Boats just around the bend, you can rent just about any type of boat to experience a summer on the water.
Hike or bike the Towpath – Any weather fun! Miles of nature along the old Ohio & Erie Canal offer a few surprises too. The remains of old locks and iron bridges appear suddenly when you round a bend. No need to stop if you’re traveling from Bolivar to Zoar – a portion of the trail extends over I-77 so you can continue your journey uninterrupted.
Just off the towpath, Zoar Wetland Arboretum features Zoar Lake for fishing, along with wildflower trails that wind around the old locks and dams built by the original Zoar settlers. The cellar of the original Zoar Brewery has been uncovered and is a marvelous sight located beneath the picnic pavilion.
Museums can be found both in Bolivar, Zoar and even in between. The site of Ohio’s only Revolutionary War Fort, Fort Laurens Museum is located just west of I-77 in Bolivar. Halfway between Bolivar and Zoar you’ll find Elizabeth’s Dollhouse Museum in Wilkshire Hills. Located in a portion of the Wilkshire Banquet Center, Martha Simon’s lifetime passion of dollhouse building is on display for children and adults to enjoy.
The village of Zoar is home to about 250 residents, many of whom live in original Zoar Separatist buildings, which are now private residences. The Ohio History Connection purchased quite a few of the Zoarite buildings – interspersed with the private dwellings; along with “God’s Acre,” an absolutely stunning public garden in the center of the historic section of the village. These OHC holdings comprise the Historic Zoar Village site, and guided tours are available. The site is managed by Zoar Community Association.
Also located in Zoar are two museums. The Ohio & Erie Canal Museum showcases old photos, tools and maps of bygone canal era days. Upstairs, the Zoar History Museum is jammed with original Zoarite furniture, textiles, photos, tools and personal pieces of life in the unique communal society days.
Find festivals galore here – Maifest, Alive!, Strawberry Festival, Garden Tour, Harvest Festival & Antique Show, Revolutionary War Battle on the Tusc, Civil War Reenactment, Christmas on the Canal and Christmas in Zoar are just the main features! Find out about our festivals on our Festival page.
